The collection contains a variety of items relating to Louis Hampton of North Carolina and later of Tennessee. There is one piece of correspondence, a letter written by Horace Kephart (1862 – 1931) to Louis Hampton, addressed from Lindale, Georgia, and dated October 5, 1909. In the letter, Kephart details his travels over the past year, his current living arrangements with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barnett, future plans, and requests for news from Hampton about recent events in Swain County, North Carolina. At this time Kephart was beginning to establish himself as a writer and an authority on outdoor life and Southern Appalachia. He had lived in Swain County from 1904 – 1907, and would return in 1910. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was a noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist and author. In 1904 he gave up a career at the St. Louis Mercantile Library and moved to western North Carolina to engage in outdoor pursuits and study the region. He settled in the Bryson City area of Swain County. Kephart wrote two books--Camping and Woodcraft and Our Southern Highlanders--based on his skills and observations.
